Southern Politics
Southern Border:
Southern "charm"
Will cuss and spit and say,
"They ar'nt the same's us,"
But our cousins are standing tall
Like our grandpas, listening, in the same room,
Who we know have the same grandmother as us,
And they have an abuela on the other side
And they share our DNA
Southern Color:
It's red.
Red iron clay with
Red iron blood where
History knows bodies laid
Because iron ore pigs
Gave up on fitting through the eye of that pin
And wanted to keep other people as slaves.
Southern Pride:
Telling our Moms and Dads we're queer
doesn't mean they'll be loving to everybody like us.
They worship the Bible; it's affects how they think.
But in it, Jesus says to a lawyer, "Love your neighbor as yourself."
They take Jesus at his word, meaning literally...most days of the year.
So, if the neighborhood changed, say their neighbor was "a freak,"
They might have to move far, far away to avoid loving a human being.
We figure that's why folks are trying to move to Mars anyway.
Southern Food:
Cornbread, Mashed Potatoes, Peas,
Greens, Fried Chicken with Spice,
Gumbo with Okra over Rice,
Used to taste really, really nice
Now it all tastes mostly like nothin'
'Cause while grandmamma had her head turned
All the Love she used to put in the food
Got spilled out all over the floor
Then granddaddy ran in
With a bunch of his friends
And they scooped it all up
Like they planned it or somethin'
And locked it in their gun safes.
Now nobody gets nothin',
Not even them, I don't think,
Not even the little kids.
Been that way now for years.
Southern Hospitality:
Known for gospel air and humidity
Known for a rotting Forrest in Tennessee
Known for warm welcomes and saying hello
Knowing for shunning Haitian kids down in Fairhope
Known for making more than enough food for everyone
Known for sundown warnings so certain folks make sure they go on home
Known for voting to take food from poor kids away... southern inhospitality, come our way
Southern Patriarchies:
Mary, the Mother of God, said
God has pulled down the arrogant and mighty from their thrones
And raised up the humble and lowly
The ones with arrogant thoughts have been scattered
The hungry have been filled with good things
Better to be scattered than shattered.
Sounds merciful to me,
More merciful than many might be
